Direct Lithium Extraction: will we ever get there?
This month US start-up Lilac Solutions became the latest company to suggest that it has come up with a Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) technology for brine producers. It claims that its new technology, based on ion exchange beads, can achieve 90% lithium recovery in less than six hours processing time. Lilac raised US$800,000 in its seed round and is now raising a further US$1.5m. DLE has long been a Mecca for brine producers; evaporation ponds require up to two years and return only 50% of contained lithium while developers contend that DLE, if successful, could take a matter of hours...
