CATL starts mass production of NCM811
Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd (CATL; SHZ:300750) announced that it has started mass production of high-nickel NCM811 batteries. It said that “the rate of progress will be based on customer demand”. This is probably the first commercial development of high nickel/low cobalt batteries and, as such, is extremely important. Given that Korean producers SK Innovation (KRX:096770) and LG Chem (KRX:051910) both delayed roll-out of their NCM811 technology last year, this could have important implications for raw materials. NCM811 batteries require a lithium hydroxide raw material rather than lithium carbonate, which rules out brine-based feedstocks, for now. In addition, with 80% nickel...
