China becomes dumping ground for low-quality lithium carbonate
The magnitude of the differentiation between Japanese and Korean carbonate import prices and Chinese highlights the difference in quality of materials being brought into each market. At prices of c.US$12,000/t clearly Japanese and Korean material is true battery grade, but at prices of sub US$7,000/t, it seems that Chinese import material is well below battery grade and this seems to be born out by Q3 results and other commentary by South American producers which seem to be prioritising market share over quality in recent months.
