How localisation of supply chains could increase the sustainability of battery production
One of the pieces of research most often quoted by detractors of the EV event (mostly oil producers and climate sceptics) is the 2017 study, The Life Cycle Energy Consumption and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Lithium-Ion Batteries, published by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. It suggested that Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions for an EV battery were of the order of 150-200kg CO2-eq/kWh, meaning that lifecycle emissions for EVs were not substantially lower than average emissions for an ICE of c.250kg CO2-eq/km.
