Is Indonesian nickel plant timing viable?
Tsingshan Group, partnering with GEM Co. Ltd (SHE:002340), updated the market on its planned nickel HPAL project, being built in Indonesia. The US$700m HPAL plant is targeted to produce 131Ktpa of nickel sulphate, 13Ktpa of cobalt sulphate and 27Ktpa of manganese sulphate and is planned to start production in 16-18 months. However, the project has still not received an environmental permit and such applications generally take at least eight months to complete. News since then has suggested that the plant might be smaller, cost more and be delayed by up to two years. Good news for nickel prices.
