Japan moving toward net import position in lithium-ion batteries
Japan continued to move towards a net import position in lithium-ion batteries in June as weak production and growing demand impacted regional balances. Japanese LIB output is down 37% y/y YTD May while net exports are down 31% y/y YTD June. While Japanese companies have invested in capacity offshore, the Koreans and Chinese have stolen a March, leaving Japanese companies to play catch-up.
