Lithium M&A dominates in December and 2021
US$9.1bn was spent on M&A deals (over US$1m) in the battery materials sector in 2021, with US$6.6bn spent on lithium and US$2.4bn on nickel. December saw the finalisation of Wyloo Metals’ acquisition of Noront Resources (TSXV:NOT), as BHP (ASX:BHP) declined to match its higher offer, and two major deals in lithium, with Rio Tinto’s (ASX:RIO) US$825m offer for the low-grade Rincon brine project in Argentina catching the market unaware, as did Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt’s (SHE:603799) acquisition of the Arcadia hard rock project in Zimbabwe.
