A fascinating battery tear down report by consultant McKinsey had some interesting conclusions about the technology and profitability of China’s top battery producers. Building better batteries: Insights on chemistry and design from China tore down the battery packs from 10 vehicles, dating from 2015 to 2020. Nine of these utilised ternary cathode materials and one LFP. These were the key conclusions: NCM811 batteries had lower raw material costs than comparable chemistries but built in higher price premia (up to 80%) for the manufacturers.
