Only three EV makers profitable at operating level
Our summary of calendar third quarter reporting for global EV makers highlights what a difficult market it remains for global EV manufacturers. Only three of them, Tesla, BYD and Li Auto are making an operating profit per unit of sales. Our analysis suggests that there is a clear level of sales of about 100,000 vehicles per quarter below which it’s difficult for EV producers to be profitable (likely associated with the very high fixed cost base of auto manufacturing).
