Sodium-ion batteries: How scalable are they and their supply chain?
In a world where many respected commentators (particularly on the Western side of the Atlantic) still describe LFP as “golf cart batteries”, what of the next low-cost chemistry to come out of China? From practically none last year, Benchmark Minerals Intelligence is now tracking 28 sodium-ion Gigafactories under construction which could total 100GWh of capacity by 2030. Our analysis pointed out unexpected winners, reiterated some concerns we already had and added others, particularly around raw materials bottlenecks that could affect supply, and highlighted some exciting opportunities.
