South Korean cathode makers to double capacity in two years
South Korea’s largest four cathode makers have announced ambitious plans to more than double their capacity over the next two years, in line with expansions by the big three Korean battery makers. EcoPro BM (KRX:247540) is to increase its capacity from 50Ktpa to 80Ktpa by 2023. It is supplying NCA cathode to Samsung SDI (KRX:006400) and also investing in capacity to support SK Innovation (KRX:096770). Posco Chemical (KRX:003670) has announced capital spending plans of KRW1.27tn (US$1.14bn) to increase its cathode capacity from 40Ktpa now to 98Ktpa in 2022 and 270Ktpa by 2025.
