Toyota to stick with metal hydrides for its hybrids
Toyota (TYO:7203), one of the world’s most successful sellers of hybrid cars which numbers 34 different models among its range, is to stick with a mixture between nickel hydride batteries and lithium-ion batteries. The carmaker believes that the different properties of the two battery formulations help its performance. Current NiMH batteries can handle sudden power demands (as can LIBs), but perform better in cold weather, while LIBs can perform better for long charge cycles. Hence Toyota uses LIB cells for all its plug-in hybrids like the Prius prime, although its all-wheel-drive hybrids like the 2019 Toyota Prius AWD use NiMH.
